APPLICATIONS

As part of the festival, we have several commissions on offer to new and existing digital creatives to help fund work that looks at the cross-section between digital art and data

Examples of work from the 2021 festival can be found here

Commissions vary between £500-£1500

In addition to this we will also cover the costs for any audience access and interpretation the work requires,

as well as travel to Nottingham and accommodation for artists who are presenting their festival commission in person

We are particularly interested in receiving applications from artists or collectives who feel like they are part of a group that has been historically and/or systemically excluded from these sorts of opportunities, whether in the past or present

If you feel like, due to intersectional and systemic discrimination,

that what you want to say has been unable to be said

or that the story you want to tell has been unable to be told

or that who you are has been unable to be expressed

then we want you to know that we will do everything in our power to help overcome that with you

Feel free to let us know this in your application

Seed Commissions - £500

We are offering three Seed Commissions of £500 for artists who are new to data driven art and performance.

This should help them start to explore the possibilities of using data in their practice, funding a work-in-progress piece that will be exhibited at the festival

If you would like to apply, please click on and download the following Application and Equal Ops form and email these back to us at puncturethescreen@gmail.com

If you have any issues downloading the forms, just email us and we'll send them to you instead.

Deadline 13th May, 23:59

Existing Work - £500

We are looking for three pieces of Existing Work that can be digitally exhibited at the festival that use data in interesting and creative ways. The £500 fee attached to these commissions should help to re-stage or further develop an existing work that has already been performed or exhibited

If you would like to apply, please click on and download the following Application and Equal Ops form and email these back to us at puncturethescreen@gmail.com

Headline Commissions - £1500

We are offering two Headline Commissions of £1500 for artists or collectives who are more familiar with data driven art and performance.

This should help them continue to explore the possibilities of using data in their practice, funding a work-in-progress piece that will headline one of the evenings at the festival

What we are looking for

Digital art or performance of any discipline

Theatre, sculpture, video games, interactive websites, dance, films, music, poetry, podcasts, etc

Work that is driven by data in some way

Work that does not digitally exclude an average audience

Your work must be able to be experienced by a person of average technological literacy, with an average internet speed, and a single device or screen

Your work, in some shape or form, must be able to be experienced both in person at Broadway Cinema in Nottingham and online, but this can happen in any way you like:

This can be an in person exhibition or performance that is recorded or live streamed

This can be an online digital artwork that is screened or exhibited in person

This can be something that exists in both the venue and online world simultaneously

Your work does not have to be perfectly polished

We'd prefer an interesting and innovative idea over something that is well crafted but unoriginal

What do we mean by data driven art?

We divide data driven art into three categories:

  1. Using publicly available data, such as scientific or census data, to inform, create, or manipulate your work

  2. Using data collected from the artist or collective to inform, create, or manipulate the work

  3. Using data collected from the audience, either before its exhibition or during, to inform, create, or manipulate the work

Puncture The Screen is most interested in exhibiting art that uses data collected from the audience to create an interactive or personal experience, but all data driven work will be considered for the festival
